The role requires strong leadership, clinical coordination,
operational management, and compliance oversight to ensure
high-quality surgical care and patient safety.
Qualifications
Required / Experience Required
- Bachelor’s
Degree in: BSc Nursing, Hospital Management, OT Management
- Valid
registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya (for nurse managers).
- Minimum
5–8 years’ experience in operation theatre services.
- At
least 2–3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.

Roles &
Responsibilities
1.
OT Operations Management
- Supervise
daily operation theatre activities.
- Ensure
smooth scheduling and optimal utilization of OT rooms.
- Coordinate
elective and emergency surgeries.
- Ensure
OT readiness prior to surgical procedures.
- Monitor
OT turnaround time between cases.
2.
Surgical Coordination
- Coordinate
with: Surgeons, Anesthetists, Nursing teams, CSSD, Biomedical
department
- Ensure
availability of instruments, implants, and equipment before surgery.
- Monitor
surgical lists and case priorities.
3.
Infection Prevention & Sterility
- Ensure
strict adherence to aseptic techniques.
- Monitor
sterilization processes and CSSD coordination.
- Ensure
compliance with infection prevention policies.
- Conduct
OT environmental monitoring.
- Ensure
biomedical waste segregation and disposal compliance.
4.
Staff Management
- Supervise
OT nurses, technicians, and support staff.
- Prepare
duty rosters and on-call schedules.
- Conduct
staff competency assessments and training.
- Ensure
adequate staffing during emergencies.
5.
Equipment & Instrument Management
- Ensure
availability and functionality of: Anesthesia machines, Surgical
lights, Electrocautery units, Suction machines, OT tables,
Laparoscopic equipment
- Coordinate
preventive maintenance and repairs.
- Monitor
instrument counts and handling procedures.
6.
Inventory & Consumables Control
- Monitor
stock levels of: Surgical consumables, Sutures, Implants, Sterile
packs, Drugs
- Prevent
stock-outs and wastage.
- Coordinate
procurement activities and vendor communication.
7.
Patient Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure
compliance with surgical safety checklists.
- Monitor
patient identification and consent verification processes.
- Investigate
OT incidents, near misses, and sentinel events.
- Ensure
emergency preparedness and crash cart readiness.
8.
Quality & Accreditation Compliance
- Maintain
OT SOPs, policies, and documentation.
- Participate
in NABH/JCI/ISO audits and accreditation activities.
- Monitor
quality indicators including: Surgical Site Infection (SSI), OT
utilization, Surgery cancellation rates, Instrument errors,
Sterility breaches
9.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare
daily and monthly OT reports.
- Maintain
records related to: Surgeries, Sterilization, Equipment maintenance,
Incidents, Infection surveillance, Submit KPI and operational
reports to management.
Key
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- OT
utilization rate, Surgery turnaround time, Surgical site infection
(SSI) rates, Surgery cancellation rates, Equipment downtime,
Sterility compliance scores, Incident and error rates, Stock-out
frequency, Staff competency compliance, Audit compliance scores
