Role Overview

Astria Learning is expanding its online academic delivery across partner universities in Malawi. We are seeking motivated early-career academics to join our team as part-time Teacher Assistants. This is a remote, half-day role designed to fit alongside existing academic or research commitments. You will support online course delivery by assisting Online Course Instructors with grading, student engagement, and LMS management working within a structured academic team under faculty supervision.

Working Arrangement

  • Fully remote — work from home

  • Half-day commitment: 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday

  • Compensation at MWK 11,500 per hour, in line with public university Assistant Lecturer rates

Weekly Grading

Grade continuous assessmnents – assignments and discussions using rubrics

Student Communications

Respond to student queries via LMS inbox within 24-48 hours. Escalate academic questions to the Dept. Head.

Doubt-Clearance Sessions

Facilitate one online doubt-clearance session (if required) per course per term (30 minutes, TA-run). Escalate unresolved queries to Dept. Head.

Final Paper Support

Assist in Grading final papers using rubrics. Sort submissions by student group prior to faculty review. Flag borderline cases.

LMS Management

Maintain accurate academic records and submission tracking within the Learning Management System.

Academic Standards

Uphold academic integrity and institutional quality standards throughout all student interactions.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

Category A — Desirable

▸ Holds a PhD degree, or has submitted / defended a PhD dissertation

▸ Has teaching experience at university level

▸ Has experience as a Research Assistant or Assistant Lecturer

Category B — Minimum Eligibility

▸ Holds a Master’s degree and has a minimum of 8+ years of university-level teaching experience

▸ Has substantial experience delivering postgraduate (Master’s) programmes

All two conditions must be met concurrently for Category B consideration.

Essential Requirements

  • Demonstrated university-level teaching or academic support experience

  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills

  • Experience with online or blended learning environments is desirable not mandatory

  • Able to work independently in a remote environment and meet academic deadlines

  • Reliable computer, internet connectivity, and a quiet professional workspace
